SPIRITUALITY

I read once an essential part of growing older was reminiscing. We find ourselves thinking and talking about our past life experiences. Although I’m not a proponent of living in the past, studies have shown that recalling our past serves several aging processes and is a part of healthy aging. It may help to preserve family history, improve quality of life, reduce symptoms of depression, help with communication, reduce stress, and contribute to overall physical well-being.

How Mindfulness is a Spiritual Practice

It seems the catchphrase today is “mindfulness.” But what exactly is mindfulness, and what is a mindfulness practice? How can mindfulness help us as we age? I was reminded of this blog last week when I was evacuated due to a wildfire.

Do you have a spirituality practice? Is it a regular part of your daily life? Why would we want to make spirituality part of our lives, and why is it a holistic aging practice? These questions we should be asking ourselves as we age. In particular, because we have the time in retirement years to observe, contemplate, and prioritize positive, healthy aging habits.
For a long time, I believed that religion and spirituality were the same; to have a spiritual practice, you had to have a religious affiliation. I now understand they are separate practices. Religion is a set of organized beliefs and practices, often shared with a community of like-minded individuals. Spirituality tends to be an individual practice set around beliefs and practices seeking the meaning of existence and obtaining a peaceful and calm life.
