Why A Holistic Approach to Aging Is Essential
February 14, 2026
Aging is often talked about as a series of problems to manage: weaker bones, slower metabolism, memory changes, and chronic conditions. The conversation is frequently reduced to medical appointments, prescriptions, and isolated lifestyle fixes. But aging doesn’t happen in compartments.

How To Stay Visible While Aging
September 16, 2025
I was reading an online poll the other day that asked readers to share the most unexpected part of aging. Out of 120 responses, the most common answer was “feeling invisible.” It was something I’d experienced too, but not at their level.

The Reason Why We Pay More and How To Pay Less For Healthcare
March 17, 2025
Health costs are inevitably going to increase as we age. It is a biological fact that our bodies experience the effects of aging. The most rapid aging periods are around 44 and then at 60. After 60, we see decreased muscle mass, increased body fat, drier and more wrinkled skin, achy joints, weaker bones (increased risk of osteoporosis), declining vision, reduced hearing, slower metabolism, potential changes in heart function, and a less efficient immune system, often leading to more noticeable signs of aging like bruises and age spots. It’s no wonder the cost of maintaining our wellness increases.
What are the Legal and Ethical Questions in Aging?
March 2, 2025
I recently had wellness appointments and was asked by three different doctors if I had an advanced directive in place. It made me feel very old. I was never asked this question when I was younger. The thought of being incapacitated or dying aren’t subjects we want to address, especially if you’re concentrating on being healthy, as I am. But after some thought, I’ve decided that addressing legal and ethical questions is a part of taking control of myself and my choices as much as I do my mental, physical, and spiritual wellness.

Why Is The Art Of Doing Nothing Important?
September 9, 2024
When I retired a few years ago, I had a concept of what I wanted it to look like. I looked at my life and divided it into thirds. The first third was from birth to 25, the second was from 25 to 60, and the last was from 60 to death. I self-described the first third as my growing and learning years, and the second as my career, family, and accumulating years. I didn’t have an exact description of the last third of my life, but I knew I wanted it to be different than the first two-thirds.
Why Grandparenting Is The Role Of A Lifetime
September 19, 2024
When my daughter suggested that I write a blog on being a grandparent, I thought it was a great idea. Then I thought about those individuals who don’t have grandchildren. Would it be fair only to address a segment of older adults? But then I realized the “grandparent” relationship benefits are equal for children and adults and are not limited to a biological connection. Silver Chats explores how our aging wisdom benefits all children and why being a grandparent is our biggest role in life.

Why Voluntourism is the Best Way to Travel
August 18, 2024
I made my first solo trip abroad in 2018. My destination was the Himalayan Mountain range that borders India and China. I had prearranged accommodations through a volunteer organization called LHA. I went online, explored destinations I had dreamed of visiting, and then looked up volunteer opportunities around and near my destination. It came together easily, and I never considered it dangerous or had any fears of traveling to India alone. I was gone 5 months and cried all the way home. I made deep connections with the Tibetan community, made lifelong friendships, and was humbled by the appreciation for donating my time to teach ESL. I vowed to return, which I did in 2022 for 6 months, doing another volunteer project.
